Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
