Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
